News & Politics

Top LGBTQ News Stories I have a confession to make – I hate the news. I do my best to avoid reading the news or watching the news or talking about the news. I know that such willful ignorance about current events is one of the many problems here in the old US of A. We are often seen as lazy and apathetic and a little bit dumb and I am part of the problem. I have every intention of changing my ways and reading an actual or virtual newspaper but then I find myself doing something like watching Lily Allen’s new video.

That link is NSFW or the eyes/ears of children, by the way.

Let me explain. I won’t deny that I am a bit lazy but I am definitely not apathetic or dumb. I just find the news so damn depressing.

It brings me down, man.

I am a “Happily Ever After” kind of person and the news is often a “Big Bad Wolf Eats Grandma” thing. I can’t take it! I just want us all to wear our little red riding hoods and have picnics while we listen to Lily Allen talk about her post-partum body.

But I can’t continue to pretend that things aren’t happening in the world or get my news in 140 characters on Twitter. So, this week, I read actual newsy things and I’m going to list a few stories that might be relevant to your interests.

Do you want the good news or bad news first?

Let’s get the bad news out of the way.

  • Senator Marco Rubio from Florida is raising money to cure gay people. I might sound a little crazy but I don’t think you can cure The Gay. It didn’t work when Pennsatucky tried to cure Big Boo in Orange Is The New Black and it doesn’t work in the real world either.

Now we can read the good news! Good news is my favorite news!

  • Not everything in Florida is bad. Late last week, the Florida Surpreme Court ruled in favor of a lesbian whose partner took their kid and left the country when they split. This may not be the “happily ever after” of my dreams but joint custody will have to do.
  • All the queers can now get married and lei’d in Hawaii! I’ve never been to Hawaii but I watched a lot of Scooby Doo as a child and the Scooby gang went there more than once, so, it’s like I’ve been there. I’m kidding! I would love to go to Hawaii, though. Someone invite me to their Big Gay Hawaiian wedding!
  • I have a fear of Texas but, this week, one Texas county instituted protections for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender inmates. The big win in my mind on this one is that transgender inmates will be be housed based on their gender identity rather than sex. This makes sense but I’m impressed that this happened in Texas.
  • There is a new LGBT family photo exhibit at the Harvey Milk Photography Center in San Francisco. Go check out some of the pictures and then check out our own Featured Families.
Aloha Scooby Doo

I did it! I read some news! I feel smarter already. I’m not sure you feel the same after reading my take on this week’s event but whatcha gonna do?

  1. I too hate watching or reading the news. Since 9/11 I just stopped watching. Spent that whole day and a few days after watching the news and totally burnt myself out on all the tragedy. Every time I’ve tried to watch it since I get no more than 10 minutes in and remember just why I don’t watch it anymore. That said, I much prefer your news report because it highlights the good stuff. If you continue to do summaries maybe I’ll actually be somewhat current on what’s going on around us =).

  2. But Michelle! That means I’ll have to keep reading the news! Ha. I’ll see what I can do 😉
