TGIF Video Moment: Edie Windsor on the SCOTUS Steps

buy provigil paypal What do you say about a little TGIF video moment on Friday afternoons? Each week we’ll rummage around the web for something great that just appeared–or some ancient, archival clip that we totally think you can’t miss.  Something queer culturey, or familyish or, as often as we can turn it up, both. A lagniappe, as they say in New Orleans, our sign that the weekend is fast upon us.

This particular moment is one that, if you haven’t seen it live that day or hadn’t seen it in coverage of the day, you just have to.  If for no other reason but to understand why so many people simply love this woman by now. It took place over two weeks ago: 83 year-old Edie Windsor, plaintiff in the DOMA case, made a statement on the steps of the Supreme Court just after the arguments, with her attorney Roberta Kaplan looking on.

The clip below doesn’t include the whole of her time there on the steps. Someone also asked her again about the brooch she wears on her lapel – the stand-in for a wedding ring that she wore during hers and Edie’s many years in the closet. And she ended her time with characteristic charm and directness, saying something to the effect of, “I’m sorry but I’m going to have to leave you now; there are some friends who’ve been waiting for me for a long time.” At which point she exited, stage right, and made for the huge rally awaiting her. A cheer erupted up from the off-camera crowd moments later.
