TGIF Video: All You Need Is Love

All you need is love. Okay, love, and also constant political pressure, and the attention of the international community, and an unshakable determination not to forget the lessons of history, and elected politicians with backbone taking  note of the passionate beliefs of the people they’re ostensibly representing, and also decent people everywhere acting on their conscience.

This is about Russia and its mounting war against LGBT people.  C.J. wrote here about it last month; just today I saw something by an old San Francisco Lesbian Avenger colleague, journalist Masha Gessen, in Michaelangelo Signorile’s column at HuffPo. You may have also seen her compelling piece, “As a gay parent I must flee Russian or lose my children” in the Guardian a few weeks back. Those treatments are informative and sober.

Below is another tack: a creative, imaginative action by folks of conscience who are not, by trade, journalists or political analysts. It’s an example of the wide, wide spectrum of action and initiative available to all of us. A group of musicians gathered in front of the Russian Embassy in Oslo to demonstrate against the anti-gay “propaganda” laws which, after having been adopted in over ten regions, have now been introduced at the national level,  in the Russian Duma.

“Love isn’t propaganda,” uploaded on September 3, 2013 by MortenGolimo.

Their selections: the waltz, from “Serenade for Strings in C major, Op. 48” by (gay, Russian)  Tchaikovsky, and the Beatles’ “All You Need is Love.”

Tusen takk, brødre og søstre, tusen takk.
