How does a lesbian mom tell her kids that she has a boyfriend?
We are too often the only queer family in whatever space we occupy. While this has not led to overt discrimination or even much detectable tension, it is a significant internal challenge.
Sick of being told that, as lesbians, we should feel a greater sense of responsibility to the earth and to sentient beings. What does one thing have to do with the other? Can’t we be dykes who love burgers, leather, and turbo?
I, like so many gay men of my generation, discovered who we are, and how our country feels about who we are, while growing up in the shadow of AIDS.
Our desire to have a book that does gender differently, and better, was key as we started writing “Sex is a Funny Word.” There weren’t any sex ed books for kids that included kids who are gender non-conforming, gender diverse, trans, or simply not sure where (or if) they belong given the options they see in ways that didn’t feel tokenistic or pathologizing.
The doctors discovered it immediately out of the womb – a murmur so pronounced that they invited nurses and interns to have a listen because there was no mistaking it.
It’s worth remembering that we couldn’t have achieved marriage equality without allies. After all, it wasn’t through Jesus’ will that we obtained marriage equality and it wasn’t planetary alignment.
The matzav scares me. It seems too overwhelming to overcome. Yet I refuse to surrender to despair.
