International Family Equality Day!

It seems like every time I turn around, there is another international day or theme month that people are celebrating and I don’t know about. Well, I just turned around again and ran smack dab into one that I love: International Family Equality Day (this coming Sunday, 5 May 2013). While relatively new, this one brings together so many things I love: community, international events (and events in the corners of the world where I live), LGBTQ rights, equality, and even parenting, zoos, picnics, music, and photography!

In June 2011, LGBTQ activists around the world gathered for the first ever International Symposium of LGBTQ parenting organizations. The symposium provided an opportunity to establish ongoing international cooperation in areas such as research, visibility and advocacy, and the development of resources and programs for LGBTQ families worldwide. One of the key outcomes was the establishment of the first International Family Visibility Day to take place on Sunday, May 6, 2012, with future IFED’s to be held on the first Sundays in May.

On 5 May 2013, LGBTQ family organizations from around the world are joining forces to increase the international visibility of LGBTQ families. Last year 15 events in nine countries were held. This year, the number seems to be rising. This year, at least 15 countries and 40 cities have committed to participate in IFED!

Over a dozen 2013 events are featured on the website:

Los Angeles, California | Chicago, IL | New York City | New England: Dover, New Hampshire |Roslindale / Dorchester, Massachusetts | Minneapolis, Minnesota | Orlando, Florida | San Diego, California | Lafayette, Colorado | Long Beach, California | Malibu, California | Berkeley, California | Turku, Finland | Helsinki, Finland | Toronto, Canada | Munich, Germany

Additional events also appear to be popping up on the Facebook page including: eight cities in Italy; seven towns in Germany; Costa Rica; Athens, Greece; Zurich, Switzerland; Montpellier, France; Vienna, Austria; Melbourne, Australia; Lisbon, Portugal; Tel Aviv, Israel; Valencia, Spain, and Tokyo, Japan!

Is there an activity near you? Will you go? If so, we would love to hear about it after the event.
